 Definition Of Relay : A device that turns on or off the supply of 1 circuit with the help of electricity is called relay. A relay is an electric switch. Which can turn on or off the supply of any circuit. Our homes have common switches that we can manually press to turn our home appliance on or off. But to use the relay we have to supply the relay. Relay Working


  1. Armature: It connects the Common Terminal with NC Contact and NO Contact.
  2. Spring: It connects Armature to NC Contact when the relay is off. Or let's say Spring pulls the armature and connects it to the NC Contact.
  3. Yoke: It is the outer part of the coil.
  4. Contact: This is the terminal of the relay where we can connect the device or circuit to whatever we need to switch.
  5. Coil: It connects the Armature to NO Contact.

How relay works ?


The way the relay works is very simple. The relay consists mainly of a coil. Which converts the NC contact in it to NO. You can easily understand this from the photo below.

Relay Working


Relay Working ? The relay requires power to work. As you can see in the photo above, when the relay is OFF, the Common Terminal is directly connected to the NC Contact. If you give a supply to the Common Terminal, it will go directly to the NC Contact. But as soon as we supply the coil of the relay. So this coil will be activated and the armature will be pulled towards it so that the Common Terminal will now move from NC Contact to NO Contact and the supply will come to Normally Open Terminal. But as soon as you turn off the supply of the relay, the Spring will pull the Armature back to its side and reconnect to the Common Terminal NC Contact.

Type Of Relay 


There are many types of relays, the size of which depends on how they are used. The type of relay depends on its use. Where the type of relay is required. If the same type of relay is used there then below you are given a list and what are the types for it.

  • Based on working principle


There are two types of relays based on working principle: 
  1. electromagnetic relays 
  2. semiconductor based relays. 
Of these, electromagnetic relays are quite large and are used in inverter stabilizers etc. The same semiconductor based relays are very small and are used in short circuits.

  •  According to the number of poles


We can only take a connection in the photo above with NO and NC contact. But if we need more than one terminal somewhere or we need more than one switching, we have to use two or more pole relays instead of one pole. In which we can turn on or off more than one circuit or device at a time.

  1. Single Pole Single Throw Normally-Open
  2. Single Pole Single Throw Normally-Close
  3. Single Pole Double Throw
  4. Double Pole Single Throw
  5. Double Pole Double Throw

Suppose you have two water pumps in your house and you want your water tank to be filled with the first water pump then the second water pump starts automatically then you will need a single pole double throw relay.
In Single Pole Double Throw relay you will find 1 NC and 1 NO terminals then you have to connect the first Water Pump to the NC Terminal first and the second Water Pump to the NO Terminal. So as soon as the first water tank is filled then your relay will be activated then NC contact will automatically become NO and NO contact will become NC and supply will start in the second water pump. So this is how you can use Single Pole Double Throw relay.

  • According to Volt


Depending on the volt or so to speak the size in the market you will find relays running on different bolts that will run from 5 V DC, 12 V DC, or 24 V DC and 110V AC, or 220 V AC Will run from
