Difference Between a Single Phase and Three Phase 

Single Phase And Three Phase ? There is a big difference between single phase and 3 phase supply. The supply in our house is single phase as we do not have large appliances in our house which need three phase supply. The need for three phase supply is felt in large scale industries where large motors and equipment are operated which require a lot of power to run. The motor fitted in a normal water pump in our house is up to 0.5 Hp or 1 HP which can run easily in single phase. But if we want to run a 5 HP motor somewhere, we will need a three phase supply. Because we all know motor needs a lot of power when it starts. That is why 3 phase supply is required for a larger motor.

The three phase supply has three stars in which the supply also varies. We cannot convert single phase directly to three phase. To make a three phase supply, a separate coil is placed in the electric generator itself so that all three phases can be made at the same time. As we all know, when the coil rotates in a magnetic field, it generates electricity. That is why three different coils in the electricity generator are connected at an angle of 120º degrees to each other so that when they make the face, their frequency also differs by 120º degrees.

As we all know, single phase electricity generator has a coil from which only one phase can be made. Why would this AC supply be in Sine Wave. For this below you are given an animation photo by which you will understand how the coil creates a sine wave when it rotates in a magnetic field.

Wires of AC supply do not have a Fix supply like DC supply, for example, if one terminal is positive then the other terminal will be Negative. But in such supply we get positive and negative supply at both the terminals which we can convert to DC with the help of rectifier. So above you can see that when the A terminal of the coil is towards the N Pole of the magnet then it has a negative supply and when it is towards the S Pole then it has a positive supply. Similarly in the AC supply wire we have a positive And negative supply is seen.

Three phase supply


Three coils are placed inside the electric generator in a three phase supply. And this coil is placed at an angle of 120 degrees to each other so that when 1 face is PEAK then the other is not at PEAK. You can better understand this by looking at the photo below.

Three Phase AC Supply

When the coils are set at an angle of 120 degrees to each other, there will also be a difference of 120 degrees in the frequency of the AC supply. You can understand this by looking at the photo above. When the first page is at peak voltage, it will be at 120 degrees. And right after the first phase, when the second phase is at peak voltage, it will be after 120 degrees from the first page. And so the third phase will be at 120 degree peak voltage.

Which supply should we use?


The supply to our house is single phase but in our city it is three phase supply to our village. Then those three faces are divided on the basis of different lanes or roads. So that there is not much load on any one thing. We do not have equipment in our house that needs three phase supply but if the load in your house becomes too much at one time and you do not work on single phase then you can take three phase connection but before that There are a few things you need to know.

  • 3 phase connection is 2 to 3 times more expensive than single phase connection
  • The bill for a three phase connection is much higher than a single phase connection.
  • Three phase equipment is also expensive.
